Sirolo

Sirolo is a municipality in the Province of Ancona in the Italian region Marche.
The town is situated near Monte Conero and in medieval times it was a castle which belonged to the Conti Cortesi family. It is a tourist destination, especially in summer times and it has been awarded one of the eleven blue flags in the region of Le Marche. It features a restored medieval town centre, which culminates with a particular little square with view on the sea and on the Monte Conero. It also regularly hosts Miss Italia which provides much entertainment. Being a relatively popular tourist destination it has many restaurants and bars. From the main piazza there is a 10 minute walk to the beautiful beach.

The beaches

The beaches that can be found in Sirolo are four Urbani , San Michele , the beach “Sassi Neri” and the beach “Le Due Sorelle” .

The first is the beach more comfortable, which consists primarily of rock and gravel, set in the cliff at the foot of the habited area of Sirolo. It is about 300 meters from the town of Sirolo and can be reached on foot via a path that starts from the center of Sirolo.

San Michele is a long pebble beach gravel and rock, which reaches to below the Conero north of the town of Sirolo. Is about 500 meters from the center of the country and you can walk through the path that descends from the Park of the Republic or by using a shuttle service offered by the City.

The beach “sassi neri” is so named because of numerous blacks in the sea cliffs and rocky ledges present on the shore. It is considered the ultimate beach nature and is characterized by rocky ledges, ravines and small tiny pebble beaches. Is about 500 meters from the town and is reached by a path that starts from the Park of the Republic.

The beach “Le Due Sorelle” is the beach that most represents the Riviera del Conero with its stacks (Two Sisters) that are the symbol of Sirolo. It consists of pebbles, white pebbles and rocky outcrops in the cliff that the embedding of Conero. It is reachable via the path of “step of the Wolf” (with a high degree of difficulty) or by sea ferries, boats, rafts or canoes.

These two beaches are equipped with facilities to keep them in their natural state as possible. Sirolo and its beaches have received recognition for several consecutive years of “Blue Flag”.

History

The first settlements in the area were part of the Piceni, while during the Roman rule was part of Humanae cives. At the beginning of the eleventh century the castle was built to guard against invasions of the barbarians. In 1225 the Cortesi family, lords of the place, give the city of Ancona in exchange for title. For this reason Sirolo is considered one of the Castles of Ancona. Sirolo had a certain autonomy from 1465 to the end of the seventeenth century, when it became part of the Papal States.
